3 Tips for Handling a Flat Tire

1. Coast to Your Stop

If you’re driving a rental van and get a flat tire, the first thing you need to do is coast to your stop. Try to avoid slamming on the brakes, which could cause the van to swerve or flip. Avoiding the brake or gas pedals will also help you gain control over the van should you be traveling at high speeds. Another good thing to do is immediately signal your intention to get over and turn on your blinkers.

2. Pull Over to a Safe Spot

When you pull over to a safe spot, make sure you do so on level ground. This will make it easier for you to change the tire. If you’re on a busy road, try to pull over to the side so that other drivers can easily pass you. Additionally, if you have the opportunity to pull into a rest stop, do that. Otherwise, make sure you pull as far away from the road as you can, and always round the vehicle from the front so oncoming vehicles can spot you easily.

3. Locate All Your Equipment before Doing Anything

It’s important to locate all the necessary equipment before you start changing the tire. This means having your lug wrench, jack, and spare tire within reach. If you’re not sure where these items are located in your rental van, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with their location before starting anything. Having all your equipment right there in front of you will make changing the tire that much easier.
