10 Vacation Safety Tips: Part 2

In Part 1 of Carl’s Van Rentals‘ series on vacation safety, we talked about five general tips for keeping yourself safe while traveling around Florida in one of our passenger van rentals. In this post, we’ll discuss five specific things to do while enjoying the outdoors and sunshine. Remember, the most important tip is to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones.

1. Don’t Approach the Wildlife

One of the most important safety tips is to avoid approaching the wildlife. Alligators and snakes are common in Florida, and they can pose a serious threat to humans. If you see an alligator or snake, do not try to get closer for a better look. Instead, stay at a safe distance and enjoy the view from afar. Remember, these animals are wild and should be respected as such.

2. Obey the Beach Signs

The beach is a fun and relaxing place, but it’s also a place to obey the signs. These signs are there for a reason, and they can help you avoid dangerous areas. For example, if you see a sign that says “no swimming” or “no lifeguard on duty,” it’s best to stay out of the water. It’s also important to pay attention to your surroundings. If you see dark clouds or strong winds, it’s best to head back to shore. 

3. Wear Plenty of Sunscreen

The sun in Florida is intense, and even if you’re only outside for a short time, you can quickly get sunburned. Be sure to apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply it every two hours or after swimming. If you’re spending time in the water, look for a waterproof sunscreen that will stay on even when you’re wet. And don’t forget to protect your lips by using a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher. 

4. Don’t Leave Your Belongings Unguarded

Vacationing in Florida can be a great experience, but it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers that can lurk around every corner. One of the most common dangers is theft, so it’s important to take precautions to safeguard your belongings. Never leave your valuables unguarded in public areas, and be sure to keep them out of sight when you’re not using them. 

5. Wear Life Jackets When on the Water

Florida is home to some of the best waterways and water activities in the country. Whether you’re swimming, boating, or just relaxing on the beach, it’s important to take precautions to stay safe. One of the most important safety measures is to wear a life jacket when you’re on the water. Life jackets provide essential flotation and can help prevent drowning in case of an accident. Even if you’re a strong swimmer, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
